Where can I find elevation maps?
You can find your elevation on Google Maps by turning on the “Terrain” function. However, Google Maps doesn’t show elevation by default, and only shows elevation in mountainous areas — it doesn’t report elevation everywhere, especially in cities or other areas that lack naturally elevated grounds.

What are digital elevation models used for?
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are raster files with elevation data for each raster cell. DEMs are popular for calculations, manipulations and further analysis of an area, and more specifically analysis based on the elevation.

Where does the elevation map of Europe come from?
The data set was compiled by EEA and is derived from the GTOPO30 dataset (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.html). The DTM was converted to raster (georefernced tiff) using Arcview and Grid Pig extension.
