Famciclovir is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles; a rash that can occur in people who have had chickenpox in the past). It is also used to treat repeat outbreaks of herpes virus cold sores or fever blisters in people with a normal immune system.
How do you take Famvir 250mg?
Start suppressive treatment to prevent outbreaks of recurrent genital herpes as soon as possible after you have your FAMVIR prescription filled. Take one 250 mg FAMVIR tablet twice each day. Continue to take one 250 mg FAMVIR tablet twice each day for as long as your doctor tells you to.
How long does it take for Famvir to start working?
The recommended dosage of Famvir is 250 mg three times daily for seven days. Treatment should be initiated as soon as possible after herpes zoster is diagnosed. Studies have shown Famvir to be of benefit when started within 72 hours of the onset of rash. Greatest benefit occurs if Famvir is started within 48 hours.
Can you take two doses of Famvir?
Each pack of FAMVIR for Cold Sores contains enough medicine for one dose. A repeat dose during this episode is not recommended. If another episode of cold sores recurs, another dose may be taken. However, treatment should not be repeated within 7 days.
