The Texas ranger style belt originally came from the cinching technique used for horse tack. Cowboys in the 1840s then altered it to leather belts to holster their guns.

Another rule of thumb for determining your belt size, would be to go two numerals up from your pant size. For example, if you wear a size 32 in pants, you will probably do well with a size 34 belt (85cm).
