Should you use a swivel with a spoon?

Should you use a swivel with a spoon?

Normally, a spoon should be fluttering through the water, not spinning, so a swivel should not be needed. However, if you’re retrieving too fast, or the current is very strong, then your spoon may start spinning, thus spinning your line, and increasing the chance you’ll get knots and tangles.

Can you catch snook on a spoon?

Spoons cast far, emit lots of flash and vibration, and they’re pretty much indestructible. Redfish, snook, largemouth bass, trout, bluefish and many other species eat them. For many anglers, spoons are specialty lures. Plastic tails are showing up on a lot of spoons, and sometimes they seem to attract more bites.

How do you retrieve spoons?

The basic technique when fishing with spoons is to cast it out and reel it back. A steady retrieve is usually best. If fish are curious but not striking, try slight variations in the speed or direction of your spoon.

Do you use a leader with a spoon?

Spoons run better (more action) on lighter leaders like 15-20lb, but 30lb isn’t too heavy either. Most of my reels have have a 25′ leader at the beginning of the season. I like to attach the leader to the mainline with a 50lb or 80lb Spro swivel.

What is the best snook bait?

Any small fish makes good live bait, as do live shrimp and crabs. Schooling baitfish, such as Pilchards, work wonders as both live chum and bait. Large dead baits fished on bottom take some very big Snook; best are Mullet heads and Ladyfish heads or halves.

Are snook good eating?

Like most seafood, snook is best eaten fresh. It does freeze well, though. But unless you’re saving it for a holiday dinner or when you have family in town, you might as well eat it within a few hours of landing it. It’s an easy fish to clean, too.
