How often should PROCRIT be given?
How often should PROCRIT be given?
This medication is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 3 times a week. Patients getting this medication before surgery may have a special dosing schedule. Hemodialysis patients should receive this medication by injection into a vein.
How often do you give epoetin?
It is usually injected one to three times weekly. When epoetin alfa injection products are used to decrease the risk that blood transfusions will be required due to surgery, it is sometimes injected once daily for 10 days before surgery, on the day of surgery and for 4 days after surgery.
When can I stop taking epoetin?
After 8 weeks of therapy, if there is no response as measured by hemoglobin levels or if RBC transfusions are still required, discontinue Epogen.
Is Epogen the same as PROCRIT?
Epogen and Procrit are both epoetin alfa, but they are marketed by two different pharmaceutical companies. The FDA approved epoetin alfa in June 1989.
How often should you increase the dose of Procrit?
Do not increase the dose more frequently than once every 4 weeks. Decreases in dose can occur more frequently. Avoid frequent dose adjustments. If the hemoglobin rises rapidly (e.g., more than 1 g/dL in any 2-week period), reduce the dose of PROCRIT ® by 25% or more as needed to reduce rapid responses.
When to reduce the dose of Procrit for hemodialysis?
The intravenous route is recommended for patients on hemodialysis. If the hemoglobin level exceeds 10 g/dL, reduce or interrupt the dose of PROCRIT ®, and use the lowest dose of PROCRIT ® sufficient to reduce the need for RBC transfusions.
When to start Procrit for chronic kidney disease?
The recommended starting dose for adult patients is 50 to 100 Units/kg 3 times weekly intravenously or subcutaneously. Initiate PROCRIT ® treatment only when the hemoglobin level is less than 10 g/dL. If the hemoglobin level approaches or exceeds 12 g/dL, reduce or interrupt the dose of PROCRIT ®.
Are there any side effects to taking Procrit?
Important Information. Procrit can cause serious side effects, including heart attack or stroke. Epoetin alfa may also speed up tumor growth, or shorten remission or survival time in some people. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using Procrit.
