Junos OS class of service (CoS) enables you to divide traffic into classes and set various levels of throughput and packet loss when congestion occurs. You can configure CoS features to provide multiple classes of service for different applications.

JunOS QoS configuration is flexible, albeit a little tricky to understand. It has a few key components which I shall list and then explain. There’s other less common things which are possible, I will not try to explain these here.
What kind of classifier does Junos come with?
JunOS comes with a default classifier for each type of classification (DSCP, MPLS, Inet Precedence, etc.). On a private network which you control, this is my preferred way of doing it. You should mark the packets as close to the source as possible. VOIP phones will usually mark packets themselves.
How is cos used in a router?
CoS is used to define trunk connections as full-duplex, incoming only, or outgoing only. Network devices such as routers and switches can be configured to use existing CoS values on incoming packets from other devices (trust mode), or can rewrite the CoS values to something completely different.
Why are cos configurations based on queue number?
CoS configurations that specify more queues than the switch can support are not accepted. If you commit such a configuration, the commit fails and a message displays that states the number of queues available. All default CoS configurations are based on queue number.
