Is RISUG available in the US?

A Berkeley, California-based non-profit called the Parsemus Foundation has licensed the RISUG technology in the US. And the related product they’ve developed, Vasalgel, is only in the preclinical phase of testing. According to Parsemus, the results from animal studies — on rabbits and monkeys — are promising.

Is RISUG approved?

RISUG, developed in India, is another intravasal injectable male contraceptive that can make men sterile for 10 to 15 years. Animal models show that it is completely reversible. Recently, RISUG was approved in India, but as a permanent contraceptive solution and not as a reversible contraceptive.

Is RISUG safe?

RISUG intravasal injection appears to be a safe clinical procedure with no significant adverse effects and has high sustained contraceptive efficacy. The localized intervention and continued contraceptive action on single-dose administration were significant features of the RISUG technology.

When was RISUG invented?

After being introduced in 1980 successful pre-clinical efficacy and safety studies on various species of animals including primates, RISUG® has also been tested successfully in number of human volunteers during Phase-I, Phase-II and Phase-III clinical trials.

Is Vasalgel safe?

Interpretation & conclusions: RISUG intravasal injection appears to be a safe clinical procedure with no significant adverse effects and has high sustained contraceptive efficacy.

Is RISUG reversible?

Over the last two decades RISUG has been drawing attention in the field of male contraception. It promises to sterile men for a period of up to 10-15 years. According to recent studies in animal models, it proves to be completely reversible.

What are the side effects of RISUG?

Reduced side effects – After testing RISUG on more than 250 volunteers, neither Guha nor other researchers in the field report have reported any adverse side effects other than a slight scrotal swelling in some men immediately following the injection which goes away after a few weeks.

What are the side effects of Vasalgel?

The side effects of Vasalgel are minimal, it does not have the side effects of a vasectomy and it is not hormonal, therefore it does not have an influence in the body’s hormonal system of men. The noticeable side effect could be a little bit of swelling after the injection, which goes away soon.

Why is RISUG not in use in the United States?

RISUG is a polymer that has been in clinical trials for over 15 years and has now reached the advanced trial stage. Unfortunately, the only men using RISUG are the ones that live close by to the study sites in India since it is not yet on the market. I was very intrigued by this concept. Why was it not in use in the United States?
