While you’re unlikely to find DDR2 RAM in many places today (it did become available back in 2004) it’s still useful for comparison. While original-generation DDR RAM ran two data transfers per clock cycle, DDR2 RAM can produce four transfers per cycle instead.

Is there DDR2 4GB RAM?
The reason for this is that 4GB is the maximum supported by 32bit systems, which DDR2 was for. Because of the 32 bit limits, and the nature of dual channel RAM, the highest capacity DDR2 sets are going to be 2x2GB sticks.
Can I put DDR3 RAM in DDR2 slot?
There are motherboards which will provide entirely separate slots for DDR2, but you cannot use DDR3 in DDR2 slots, or both types together.
Can I replace DDR2 with DDR4?
All DDR memories are mutually incompatible. The DDR2/3/4 DIMMs can only be used on their respective DDR2/3/4 sockets, with the notches differently located.
Does DDR2 support 8GB RAM?
DDR2 DIMMs are neither forward compatible with DDR3 nor backward compatible with DDR. The maximum capacity on commercially available DDR2 DIMMs is 8GB, but chipset support and availability for those DIMMs is sparse and more common 2GB per DIMM are used.
Can DDR3 be used instead of DDR2?
DDR3 is not backwards compatible with DDR2. In other words, a DDR3 module cannot be placed in a DDR2 memory socket, and vice-versa.
How do I know if my RAM is DDR2 or DDR3?
Check RAM Type Open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. Select memory from the column on the left, and look at the very top right. It will tell you how much RAM you have and what type it is. In the screenshot below, you can see that the system is running DDR3.
