What causes Synchysis Scintillans?

What causes Synchysis Scintillans?

Synchysis scintillans is postulated to be due to a degenerative process in the vitreous. This can happen in any age group due to other ocular conditions like vitreous hemorrhage, hyphema, retinal detachment, or chronic uveitis.

What causes asteroid hyalosis?

Vitreous humor is the fluid found between the retina and the lens of the eye. The calcium and lipid deposits often reflect the light. This reflection can create the appearance of stars in the night sky — hence the name, asteroid hyalosis.

What is vitreous hemorrhage?

A vitreous hemorrhage is bleeding into the thick fluid that fills the centre of the eye. This fluid is called the vitreous gel. The gel is clear, so light passes through it to the retina.

What does vitreous Syneresis mean?

Vitreous Syneresis: The vitreous is a jelly-like substance naturally present in our eyes. As we age, the vitreous begins to change (syneresis) and pull away from the retina. Typically, this leads to the development of floaters which appear as black spots/ floaters in our central vision.

What is a Weiss ring?

A “Weiss ring” is the circular peripapillary attachment that is visible within the vitreous after it has become detached from the optic nerve head. Figure 3: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the macula from a patient who had complete separation of the vitreous (arrowhead) from the fovea center.

Is asteroid Hyalosis bad?

Asteroid hyalosis is benign and does not cause any complications. However, some cases may develop dense AH and cause troublesome floaters, which may need vitrectomy.

Can patients see asteroid Hyalosis?

The asteroid bodies do not normally affect the patient’s vision. On rare occasion, some patients do complain of blurry vision and/or floaters. The vision may be cleared if a retina specialist feels that a vitrectomy is warranted.

How do you fix a vitreous hemorrhage?

Small vitreous hemorrhages may be treatable with a laser treatment that repairs the bleeding vessels and tears in the retina, if applicable. Once the source of bleeding has been repaired, it can take several weeks for the blood that has accumulated in the eye to clear.

Can stress cause vitreous hemorrhage?

Stress is not a recognized cause of subconjunctival hemorrhage. The good news is, if you had a conjunctival hemorrhage, these are only cosmetically annoying but go away and do not endanger the vision.

Can Doctors see eye floaters?

Yes, your eye doctor can see eye floaters during an eye exam. While most of the time floaters are harmless, sometimes they can indicate a serious, sight-threatening eye problem – such as retinal detachment.
