Are Miller Thunderbolt welders any good?

The quality of welds with the stick welder were only fair at best. I bought a LIncoln 175 wire feed and so far it’s handled every challenge I’ve given it with no problem. I still consider myself a novice and for me the wire feed is much easier to use and I get much better quality welds.

Is AC or DC welding better?

DC stick welding offers advantages over AC when welding steel, including smoother and more stable arcs, easier starts, fewer arc outages, less spatter and easier vertical up and overhead welding. DC positive polarity provides a high level of penetration into the steel.

Is arc better than MIG?

The arc, created by an electrical current between the base metal and the wire, melts the wire and joins it with the base, producing a high-strength weld with great appearance and little need for cleaning. MIG welding is clean and easy and can be used on thin or thick metals.

Is stick welding stronger than MIG?

Quality of Weld Despite being good for thicker plates, stick welders are not ideal for thin metal projects. The E70s6 bare wire used in MIG and 7018 stick used in stick welders are both equally strong. They have a 70,000 psi tensile strength, which is stronger than most steels that you will work with.

Is the ground positive or negative on a welder?

Positive Polarity (DCEP) #1 Choice Stick electrodes are generally run with a positive polarity (DCEP). With this setup, your electrode holder (stinger) has a positive current flowing to the stick electrode (also just called a “rod”). Your ground lead will be attached to the negative terminal of your machine.

How do you know what welding rod to use?

First, select a stick electrode that matches the strength properties and composition of the base metal. For example, when working on mild steel, generally any E60 or E70 electrode will work. Next, match the electrode type to the welding position and consider the available power source.
