The station is located behind a street market of the same name and opposite the Royal London Hospital. It lies between Aldgate East and Stepney Green stations on the District and Hammersmith & City lines, and between Shoreditch High Street and Shadwell stations on the East London Line. What happened to the East London line?
The East London line is part of the London Overground, running north to south through the East, Docklands and South areas of London. After nearly 75 years as part of that network, it closed on 22 December 2007 for an extensive refurbishment and expansion, reopening as part of the Overground network in April 2010.

The new station concourse will sweep from Whitechapel Road over the east-west Underground lines and above the north-south Overground lines before dipping under the road bridge at Durward Street. It continues along the course of the railway cutting where it then allows access to the new platforms.

Are there Crossrail trains from Whitechapel to Canary Wharf?
Whitechapel station will act as an interchange between the Crossrail, Hammersmith and City, District (HCDL) and London Overground (LO) lines. The station is expected to witness 24 Crossrail trains per day during peak times. Trains from Whitechapel station will run to Liverpool Street station in the west and Stratford or Canary Wharf in the east.
Where is the ticket hall at Whitechapel Crossrail?
Access to all interchange services will be from a spacious, new ticket hall sitting on a bridge above the Victorian railway. Entry to the station will be through the refurbished original entrance on Whitechapel Road. To improve connectivity to the surrounding area a new second entrance will be provided at the northern end of the station.
