What is a BACT alert?
What is a BACT alert?
BacT/Alert (Organon Teknika Corp., Durham, N.C.) is an automated microbial detection system based on the colorimetric detection of CO2 produced by growing microorganisms.
How does the BACT Alert work?
BacT/ALERT® BPA (color-coded blue) – BacT/ALERT BPA disposable culture bottles contain 40ml of media and an internal sensor that detects carbon dioxide as an indicator of microbial growth. Bottles are prepared with an atmosphere of CO2 in oxygen under vacuum.
What is BACT alert FA Plus?
BACT/ALERT FA PLUS culture bottles are used for the recovery and detection of aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms (bacteria and yeast) from blood and other normally sterile body fluids. Each case contains 100 bottles.
What is aerobic blood culture bottle?
Blood cultures are drawn into special bottles that contain a special medium that will support the growth and allow the detection of micro- organisms that prefer oxygen (aerobes) or that thrive in a reduced-oxygen environment (anaerobes). Multiple samples are usually collected.
When to use BacT / ALERT Fn plus culture bottles?
BacT/ALERT® FN Plus Culture Bottles are used with the BacT/ALERT Microbial Detection System in qualitative procedures for recovery and detection of anaerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms from blood and other normally sterile body fluids.
What do you need to know about BacT / ALERT?
The BACT/ALERT ® system uses media cleared for use with blood, sterile body fluids and platelets, as well as specialized media for detection of mycobacteria.
How long to incubate BacT / ALERT fan blood cultures?
*Bourbeau PP and Pohlan JK. Three days of incubation may be sufficient for routine blood cultures with BACT/ALERT® FAN® blood culture bottles. J Clin Microbiol. 2001; 39 (6): 2079-82.
Which is better BACTEC plus or fan aerobic?
Significantly shorter recovery time was observed in BACTEC Plus aerobic bottles than in FAN aerobic bottles (17.2 and 24.7 h, respectively) (P < 0.001). Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
