Severe mania can involve psychosis, with hallucinations or delusions. Hallucinations can cause a person to see, hear, or feel things that are not there. People may have delusions and distorted thinking that cause them to believe that certain things are true when they are not.

How do you know when a bipolar person is manic?

Both a manic and a hypomanic episode include three or more of these symptoms:

  1. Abnormally upbeat, jumpy or wired.
  2. Increased activity, energy or agitation.
  3. Exaggerated sense of well-being and self-confidence (euphoria)
  4. Decreased need for sleep.
  5. Unusual talkativeness.
  6. Racing thoughts.
  7. Distractibility.

How long can manic psychosis last?
