Phonics: Autumn 2021 Year 2 The Department for Education (DfE) and Standard Testing Agency (STA) have announced that in the 2021 to 2022 academic year schools must administer a past version of the check to year 2 pupils, this is due to the cancellation of the year 1 phonics screening check in June 2021.

What year is the phonics screening test?

Year 1
The Phonics Screening Check is a test for children in Year 1. Children take it during June in a one-to-one setting with a teacher. This is usually their class teacher, but it could also be the headteacher or another teacher who knows the child well.

What phonics should Year 1 know?

In Phase 1 phonics, children are taught about:

  • Environmental sounds.
  • Instrumental sounds.
  • Body percussion (e.g. clapping and stamping)
  • Rhythm and rhyme.
  • Alliteration.
  • Voice sounds.
