Seriously deteriorated by the time of the town’s acquisition in 1962, the interior debris was burned in a controlled fire in the 1980s, and the walls were fenced off in 2009.

You can visit the museum in the former keeper’s house, which sits in Fort Williams Park, off Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth. Many Casco Bay boat tours pass this light. You can also take a bus tour to the lighthouse. The tower is only open in September on Open Lighthouse Day, when access is very limited.

When to visit Fort Williams and Portland Head?
