Is a Silpat the same as parchment paper?

While many recipes call for using either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat like a Silpat, the two aren’t 100-percent interchangeable. Because it is disposable, parchment can be used in many recipes where a silicone baking mat cannot: It can be cut to size to line cake pans and casserole dishes.

What do you bake on Silpat?

Here’s a quick list of things that I bake using my Silpat:

  1. Bake cookies like my favorite: Peanut Butter Cookies, Frosted Sour Cream Sugar Cookies and Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.
  2. Roasted vegetables.
  3. Pizza!
  4. Candied Nuts.
  5. Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos.

Can you use Silpat for baking?

The silpat itself is also slightly tacky, so when you lay it down on your cookie sheet, it stays there. We use our silpat in place of parchment paper or aluminum foil when baking just about everything. It’s particularly great for baking very delicate things like crackers, meringue, and puff pastry.

Nothing sticks to them. Nothing, not a damn thing, will lodge itself onto a Silpat mat, unless you burn it to an absolute crisp. Even then, it’ll take one swipe of a dish sponge to loosen it.

Why is Silpat so expensive?

The Silpats are from France, but they are also thicker and sturdier. Definitely a higher quality product, which is why they cost more.

Answer: You can cook anything on a silpat mat but I have never tried bacon. I just put bacon on a baking sheet and it works.
