How do you recenter a candle wick?

Keep the wick in the center

  1. Extinguish the candle immediately.
  2. Use a wick dipper or wick tweezer to re-center the wick. Sink the wick dipper or tweezer down into the melted wax about 1/2″ and use it to GENTLY push the wick towards the center.
  3. Let the wax harden before you relight.

Why is a wick needed to burn a candle?

The wick does the important job of keeping the molten wax in the heat of the flame long enough to vaporize. Liquid wax does not burn. Wax has to be in its gaseous state before it will ignite and burn. If you look at the wick of a candle that has already been used you will see that it is all burnt and black.

Why does a candle wick burn so slowly?

Candles have a slow burn rate because the wax has to completely melt before the wick is consumed by the flame. However, candles with different colors, shapes, sizes, and types of wax can cause them to burn faster or slower.

Why does a wick on a candle turn black?

If the wick is too long, the flame sits too far above the wax. This will cause an imbalance in the heat that negatively affects the chemical reaction. Unburned carbon atoms result in black smoke and soot. Your candle or its jar turns black. Keeping the wick trimmed between ⅛ inch (0.32 cm) and ¼ inch (0.64 cm) will help prevent this from happening.

What should I know about burning candles?

Get it right the first time. Just like the first cut is the deepest, that first burn is the most important. Don’t keep candles burning for longer than indicated on the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the flame away from moving air. Store your candles properly.
