What does winch size mean?
Winch numbering relates to the power ratio of the winch. That is the highest gear ratio multiplied by the length of the winch handle over the radius of the drum plus half the rope diameter. That means that on a size 48 winch turning a winch handle through 48 inches of arc will pull the rope in by 1 inch.
What does self tailing winch mean?
A self-tailing winch holds the line in place by itself. This means you don’t need to hold the line while you’re turning the winch, or need an extra pair of hands for pulling the line. Because of this, a self-tailing winch allows you to sail short-handed (solo).
How do 2 speed winches work?
With a two speed winch, clockwise grinding is the same as the single speed, however, counter clockwise grinding will engage another set of gears which keep the drum rotating in the same direction, but at a lower the speed, thus increasing the power.
How do I know what size winch I need?
To figure how much winch your vehicle needs, add at least 30 percent to the working GVW. Say, for example, your working GVW comes to 6,700 pounds. That means you should be looking for a winch that will provide at least 8,000 pounds of working load capacity.
How do you measure a winch?
For trucks, it’s simple. Take the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and multiply it by 1.5. For example, if you’ve got a new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon two door.
Do you need self tailing winches?
Self-tailing winches are essential for short-handed sailing or for longer cruises when a sheet or halyard can be set and locked off in one place for long periods of time.
What is a non self tailing winch?
A non self tailing winch has just the drum; you have to manually tail it to maintain enough friction to actually winch stuff. If you let go of the line, there’s a pretty good chance whatever that halyard is holding up will suddenly not be up anymore.
How do you dismantle Arco Hutton winches?

What is the advantage of a self tailing winch?
Self-tailing winches Offer the same manual power advantages as the plain top version but have an integrated stripper arm and rope jammer on top of the drum. This allows the winch to be operated by a single person.
Why are sailboat winches so expensive?
They’re all expensive, because they are well-made precision equipment. They’re also among the most frequently retrofitted items; it’s worth repeating here that an oft-heard saying aboard a lot of sailboats is that the winches they came with are not big enough.

Do you need a larger winch for a monohull?
