What are ZOAS and palys?
Zoanthid and Palythoa are both colonial type corals, meaning they form a colony of individual polyps all living together. They are commonly referred to as zoas and palys.
Are Rasta ZOAS rare?
One of our best zoanthids, the Rastas are very rare and incredibly beautiful. With their red/yellow/green color combination, these are definitely a show quality coral.
Which ZOAS are toxic?
Species of Zoanthid coral (e.g. Palythoa species and Zoanthus species) can contain a highly toxic, naturally-occurring and potentially lethal substance known as Palytoxin. Zoanthid corals are often recommended to new marine aquarium owners because they are considered to be relatively easy to keep.
Do ZOAS like strong flow?
Ideally, your Zoanthids should live in a low to medium-high flow area. If placed in too high of a flow area, polyps will have a difficult time opening, which stunts its growth/development. Generally, Zoas prefer a location that’s neither too shaded or too exposed.
Do zoas need magnesium?
For Zoanthid Care, there is very little that needs to be done in regards to special alkalinity, calcium, or magnesium levels. Maintaining a stable alkalinity, within about 0.5dKh will be one of the greatest maintenance routines you can do for nearly all corals. Maintaining Magnesium near 1300ppm is also beneficial.
Are zoas Hardy?
Zoanthid corals, affectionately called zoas by aquarium hobbyists in online forums (I guess because “zoanthid corals” is too long to type), are a trendy type of coral kept in reef tanks. They are hardy and will grow well in most reef tanks, making them a great aquarium coral for beginners.
What is the most expensive Zoanthid?
The grandmaster Krak zoanthid is by far one of the most expensive corals for its size.
What is a torch coral?
The Torch coral, Euphyllia glabrescens, is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral that originates from Indo-Pacific reefs. The torch coral has long, flowing, fleshy polyps that extend from a calcified (stony) base. In moderate water flow, these corals look a bit like a torch (where they get their common name).
Can I touch zoanthids?
You should never touch the tissue of a Zoanthid or Palythoa coral, especially Palythoa. Always handle the frag from the frag plug and the colony from the rocks underside. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling them. It is important to wear gloves, a mask, and eye protection when fragging them.
Do Pandora ZOAS have palytoxin?
Caution Should be Taken with Pandora Zoanthids Some Zoanthids and Palythoa contain a powerful neurotoxin called palytoxin which can be extremely harmful if it comes in contact with your bloodstream. Take special care handling polyps and avoid handling if you have an open cut on your hands.
Can ZOAS handle high flow?
Community Member While zoas can adjust to different levels of flow I wouldn’t suggest keeping it directly in front of a power head long term. Could be something irritating the zoas, maybe a dip is in order. Sometimes zoas take a while to adjust and acclimate as well.
Do ZOAS like phosphate?
Phosphates aren’t good for Zoas either. RODI should be helping unless its time to change your filters.
