Can you solder to nickel plating?

Can you solder to nickel plating?

A. It is not possible to solder to nickel or Electroless nickel deposits without removing the oxide layer. It is better to remove the oxide and solder in an ordinary atmosphere.

Can you solder to electroless nickel plating?

To make electroless nickel-phosphorous plated deposits easy to solder requires a strong acid flux or a heat-treat process. There are several heat-treat processes that can remove phosphorus from the surface along with oxide to make EN-P solderable. At 600°C, the phosphorus begins to migrate to the surface.

Can nickel be soft soldered?

yes it can with an agressive flux application. We solder some nickle plated brass quick connect tabs at work. With enough/aggressive flux it works just fine.

Can You solder a wire to a nickel plated terminal?

If the wire you are soldering is small, you could consider using a crimp type lug similar to what is used on thermocouple wire, and crimping to the wire and then attached to the terminal by a tapped screw. soldering to nickel plated wiring components is not new, commonly used in high temperature wiring.

What kind of conductors can be soldered with nickel?

In the past, nickel plated conductors were rarely used in applications requiring soldered terminations, however, with nickel’s excellent corrosion resistance, they are increasingly being specified in more general applications. Nickel forms a very tenacious oxide which requires a very active flux for soldering.

What kind of solder do you need for silver plating?

This is a common misconception. You need a small amount of silver in your solder if you are soldering to silver. The two most common situations are silver plating on component leads and silver palladium substrates. In both these cases the Sn62 alloy should be used. Can You solder nichrome wire to copper wire?

Soldering joints which had been crimped cured such connection problems and solder joints were not a significant trouble cause. The above was with copper wires, not Nichrome. Nichrome can be expected to be more difficult to manage well. I’ve used scrape, wrap, solder as in second method below, with good-enough success. Not always pretty.
