Couple that lack of experience with fire apparatus that has gotten progressively larger over the years and you have a challenge that has also gotten more complex for both the student and the teacher. Fire apparatus driver training is an art and a science.
Can a firefighter be a good driving instructor?
Not every fire apparatus driver/operator in your department will make a good driving instructor, and that’s OK. Another feature of the Ponderosa program and the NVFC program that I liked was that they provide guidance and direction for the program coordinator as well as the driver trainers within the department.
