Simply put, the FT-991a is the upgraded version of the older FT-991 from Yaesu. The FT-991 was created to be an all-band transceiver (MF/HF/VHF/UHF bands) with a digital screen. The FT-991a retains all of this capability as well as the same multi-mode operation and digital modes.

Which is better the ts-590sg or the ft-991a?

The receivers in the TS-590SG & IC-7300 are somewhat better (IC-7300 is noisy though), but the FT-991A receiver is close to the IC-7300 & TS-590SG. The FT-991A has crystal clear receive audio plus has a great DNR. Downsizing, I sold the other radios and kept the FT-991A.
