Whether Pay-Per-Ride or Unlimited Ride, every MetroCard has an expiration date. The date is located at the upper left corner on the back of the card. The expiration date is usually about one year from the date of purchase. The Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard can’t be replaced if it is lost or stolen.

Can I track my MetroCard?

Every MetroCard has a number on the back that you can use to track your card. Typically this is done only when cards are lost or stolen, but if circumstances permit, the number can be used to track use of the card for other reasons by using an MTA Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request.

To view your balance online, use the metrocard widget on the home page. Type in your metrocard number into the box and then click on “show balance” below, your balance will then appear. To top up click on “Login”. This will take you to a secure site where you can use your credit card or debit card to top up your metrocard.

Can you combine MetroCard balances?

You can use up the small amount of a Metrocard on a bus and make up the balance with change. However, you won’t be able to use the card for a transfer if you do this. 2. If your Metrocard is not expired, you can bring it to any attended station booth and ask them to consolidate multiple cards or add the remaining balance to a different card.
