Traditionally, binding is sewn by machine to the front of a quilt, turned around to the back and hand sewn. The technique that I’ve developed is a bit different than binding is traditionally done, because I sew the binding on the back of the quilt, flip it around to the front, and then top stitch it down to finish it.
How do you sew bias binding on a quilt?
Trim one of the binding tails to the halfway mark on your quilt.
- Overlap your binding.
- Using a ruler, mark 1/2in past the trimmed edge and cut on this mark.
- Join your two sides together with pins and sew using a 1/4in seam allowance.
- Finger press the seam open.
- Finish attaching the binding to the quilt back.
Do I quilt or bind first?
Binding a quilt is the final step in finishing. Before you bind, you need to somehow “quilt” your quilt. This means to attach the front and back, with batting in between.
Can I use a sheet for quilt backing?
We’ll talk about this in more details, but here’s the short story: you can ABSOLUTELY use bed sheets for quilt backs! There’s a few obvious benefits to this: No piecing together a quilt back! This is the best benefit – just buy a sheet big enough to back your quilt and you don’t need to piece it together!
Can you bind with a bra?
The most popular safe methods are to use commercial binders, sports bras, strategic layering, and bandages or elastic materials. If you’re binding frequently, make sure to take breaks throughout the day and take days off, as binding continuously can cause negative side effects (2,4).
Where do you sew on a machine binding?
Sew right along the edge of the binding on the back…you are trying to sew to the left of the seam line always. If you pull that binding past the seam line and sew right long the fold of the binding strip…you should be fine.

What’s the best way to make bias binding?
Tip 2: My binding strips are cut 2 1/4″ wide on the straight of grain. This width works for most quilts. Unless the edges are curved, I don’t feel the need to make bias binding. I join my binding strips with a diagonal seam and press the strips in half along the length (wrong sides together) to create a double-fold binding.
