Is Makrolon the same as polycarbonate?

Plaskolite LLC, which recently acquired the Covestro polycarbonate sheet business, has launched Tuffak® Polycarbonate Sheet, a premium polycarbonate sheet product formerly known as Makrolon®. The name is the only change–the product itself and all manufacturing processes will remain the same.

Is Makrolon the same as Lexan?

Yes, they are the same thing. Lexan™ is actually a brand name of polycarbonate manufactured by Sabic Innovative Plastic. We offer both Lexan™ and Makrolon® brand polycarbonate sheet. Makrolon® is manufactured by Sheffield Plastics Inc.

Does polycarbonate block UV?

The polycarbonate shields offer 100% UV protection up to 360 nm and blocks approximately 96% of UV light up to 380 nm.

Is Makrolon Food Safe?

Makrolon 2456 resin complies with FDA food contact regulations 21 CFR 177.1580 (Polycarbonate Resins) and may be used in contact with all food types. Most colors may be used for all thermal food contact applications.

Which is stronger plexiglass or polycarbonate?

Generally speaking, acrylic sheeting is shinier and polycarbonate sheet is stronger. Acrylic and polycarbonate both weigh less than half of what a comparably sized piece of glass weighs yet they are both much stronger than glass. Both materials are also very easy to clean.

Is polycarbonate as strong as Lexan?

Sheet grade polycarbonate (aka Lexan or Makrolon) and acrylic sheet (aka Lucite) are two of the most frequently used see-through plastics. They are both stronger and lighter than untempered glass; acrylic is 4x to 8x stronger than glass, while polycarb is about 200x stronger.

Does Lexan turn yellow?

It depends on climate and whether the Lexan was treated or coated for UV exposure. There are greenhouses that go far more than 10 years and they aren’t yellow. For untreated Lexan the yellow is on the surface and can be polished off.

Are there different grades of Lexan?

SABIC (formerly GE) brand Lexan® polycarbonate sheet is available in many different grades, with varying properties and transparency. Likewise, Plaskolite brand Tuffak® polycarbonate sheet is also available in many different grades with a variety of different properties.
