What is the Expedition in DofE?

All DofE expeditions are about solitude and isolation, particularly those at Gold level which are expected to be in areas of DofE wild country. Setting an aim to seek out and interact with people outside of the team is not in keeping with the core objective of solitude.

Can you do the DofE expedition by yourself?

All expeditions must be unaccompanied and self-sufficient. The team must be properly equipped, and supervision must be carried out remotely. Teams must possess the necessary physical fitness, first aid and expedition skills required to complete their expedition safely.

What is a qualifying expedition aim?

To pass your QUALIFYING expedition, your team must have an AIM. Your aim does not need to be long or complicated. Keep it simple and something you will be interested in. Something you can easily do along the walk or at the end of the day. Agree your team AIM in advance and write it on your route card.

Can you smoke on DofE?

Smoking. The use of bongs, hookahs, or similar or associated items, for the purpose of smoking flavoured tobacco or other substances, is strictly prohibited. Any participant contravening this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.

Can you fail DofE?

You cannot fail a DofE Expedition. However at the end of a practice expedition we occasionally have to recommend that some groups undertake further training and practice to ensure that they are fully prepared to safely undertake an unaccompanied qualifying expedition.

Can you do Gold DofE without bronze or silver?

For Gold, you’ll need to do your programme for at least 12 months if you’ve achieved your Silver Award, or 18 months if you’ve started at Gold level without doing your Silver – even if you’ve done Bronze.

Can you fail D of E?

It is not possible to fail a DofE award, but you can fail expeditions or have evidence rejected. This means that in some instances individuals will have to redo an expedition, or even restart entire sections.

What counts as evidence for DofE?

The minimum is a complete Assessor’s Report. This can be handwritten on the form in your Welcome Pack (by your Assessor) and uploaded as a photo, or the Assessor can enter it directly into www.edofe.org/assessor. Some people choose to upload regular texts updates or photos as evidence of their participation.
