The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and ohv/off road driving and is best used from April until October. Due to extreme fire risk, the Forest Service has temporarily closed access to all National Forests in California. The closure is in effect from Aug 31, 2021 to Sept 17, 2021.

To reach Bowman Lake, you’ll first have to know that it is out of the way of everything else in the park. From nearby towns like West Glacier or Apgar, it will be a 1.5-hour drive. You will pass through the little town of Polebridge, Montana on your way to Bowman Lake.

The road out to Bowman Lake is paved for the first 8 miles. Beyond that the gravel road leading past Bowman Lake and out to Faucherie Lake can be very rough. High clearance vehicles are recommended.

But the rewards are so worth it! Bowman Lake’s location in the northwest corner of Glacier National Park (the North Fork area) makes it far less crowded than Going-to-the-Sun Road and the other popular regions of the national park. It wasn’t just the sights that made Bowman Lake enjoyable.

It’s worth the drive out there. Be prepared for the drive down long windy, dirt bumpy roads. Take it slow and pack a lunch before hand (or grab yummy treats at the Polebridge Merc right before the dirt road starts). The views are breathtaking.

The sheer beauty of Bowman Lake is so worth the off-road drive. Or you can backpack the 7.1 miles into the campsite at the head of the lake for a peaceful night’s stay but don’t forget your bear spray, bears are know to inhabit this region.

Lake Spaulding is owned by PG&E. We scouted the campground but did not stay here because there is no cell service on either Verizon or AT. The campground is suited to very small rigs and trailers due to a narrow twisty road and trees growing close to the edge of the road.

The Bowman Lake can be reached by following along the Glacier Route 7 north to junction with Bowman Lake Road, just north of Polebridge. Take Bowman Lake Road (narrow, but graded gravel road) to the Bowman campground.

2…When the road to Bowman Lake is not closed for traffic, it has been graded a bit but is still narrow, dirty and takes some time to travel. We were lucky to arrive this year just before the parking filled.

Vehicles over 21’ in length and/or vehicle- trailer combinations are prohibited at Bowman Lake due to the nature of the long, narrow, and windy dirt road to the campground, and very tight parking areas at each campsite.

There is no trash service. Bowman Lake is a large lake surrounded by rocky cliffs and scattered pines that are great for fishing and swimming. A few islands are found within the lake. Car top boat launch only. The road to access the campground is very rough, rocky, and narrow.
