Friston Forest is within the South Downs National Park between Lulington Heath National Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park. It is the largest area of recently established forest in South East England. This expansive beech woodland makes a perfect family day out for those who love exploring the countryside.

Friston Forest was newly planted in the 1930s and 1940s as part of the Forestry Commission’s remit to boost the amount of woodland in Britain and counter the then-precarious reliance on imported timber, especially in times of international strife.

The forest has been planted on former open downland and stretches from Lullington Heath in the north to the A259 in the south, Litlington Road to the west and Jevington Road to the east. Our car parks open at 8:00am all year around. We have the following closing times: Friston Forest is located adjacent to Seven Sisters Country Park, between Seaford and Eastbourne. There are three car parks at Friston Forest. Friston Forest main car park is located on Litlington Road between Exceat and Litlington.
Where are the bridleways in the Friston Forest?
This circular route starts at the car park and takes you along some of the bridleways in the forest. It also visits the pretty village of West Dean. It’s easy to extend your outing by visiting the nearby Cuckmere River and Cuckmere Haven and Seven Sisters Country Park. You could also pick up the The South Downs Way which runs past the forest.
