In 2012, CRB Checks were replaced by DBS Checks when the Criminal Records Bureau merged with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). This new body became known as the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Is CRB check same as DBS?
There really is no difference between the CRB and DBS. The only difference is the ISA and CRB merged to create the DBS, Disclosure and Barring Service.
Can I view my CRB certificate online?
The person being given a DBS check (the applicant) can view their certificate using their DBS online account. After logging in, select ‘Manage DBS checks’, request a one-time passcode and enter the required security information. Your DBS applications will then be shown, and you can view the necessary certificate.
Can I check my CRB myself?
Yes, you can apply for a DBS check as an individual. You do not need to be part of a company or organisation. Individuals cannot apply for an Enhanced DBS check or Standard DBS check however, because this can only be requested by eligible organisations or companies.
Can I refuse a DBS check?
Employers are not allowed to do criminal records checks on whomever they choose, so should take your concerns seriously. Some however might just assume you have something to hide in refusing to have a DBS check carried out.
How far back does a CRB check go?
There is no limit to how far back an enhanced or standard check can go. For basic checks, only unspent convictions will be listed on a certificate.

How long is a DBS valid for?
There is no official expiry date for a criminal record check issued by DBS . Any information revealed on a DBS certificate will be accurate at the time the certificate was issued. You should check the ‘date of issue’ on a certificate to decide whether to request a newer one.

If a basic check is required, the employer can ask the individual to apply directly to DBS (if they work in England or Wales) or Disclosure Scotland (if they work in Scotland). How can I check the progress of my DBS certificate?
You can use the DBS tracking service to check the progress of your DBS certificate. You will need your certificate number. You must register for the Update Service within 30 days of the certificate being issued. For basic checks, register for an online services account instead of using the Update Service.
