How do you adjust a Grohe mixing valve?

This is a simple procedure with a GROHE thermostat.

1. Open the shut-off valve and check the temperature of the water with a thermometer.
2. Lever out cap.
3. Remove screw.
4. Detach temperature control handle.
5. Turn regulating nut until the water temperature has reached 38 °C.

Its a Grohe replacement with exactly the same part number. The fault is exactly the same – i.e no water flows, hot or cold. If I remove the old cartridge wax capsule, only hot water flows. Put it back in, all stops. Please – any ideas whats happening? There’s something I know nothing about here! Not a scooby.

We ran 3/4″ pipes to hot and cold with a reducer to 1/2″ at the very end. This is an 1/2″ mixer. We also have a tankless water heater that is set to 120 degrees F, so I get an endless supply of hot water. My thermometer only goes to 110, so it may always be at 120.
