Are HSS Strats good?

Are HSS Strats good?

If you play want a Stratocaster for metal or hard rock, go with the HSS version. You need a humbucker at the bridge position, and I personally prefer the single-coil at the neck. I think that makes for a more versatile guitar. It will give you some nice, warm, round tones you can’t get with the single-coil.

Who plays HSS Strats?

Kirk Hammett used an HSS Strat at a point, he even has an EMG signature HSS set. Andy Timmons uses HSS Strats. Those and the ones the others mentioned are a few. If you think people don’t like the bridge humbucker tone on a Strat just look at EVH and many of the hair metal bands in the 80’s.

Which is better HSS or HSH?

You generally want to use a vintage to medium output humbucker to match the output of the single-coils. With HSH guitars, you have 2 humbucker tones and 3 single-coil tones. With HSS guitars, you get 1 humbucker tone and 4 single-coil tones. HSH gets my vote.

That is why Fender labeled it “HSS” to denote its humbucker (H), single-coil (S), and single-coil (S) pickup arrangement. Fender added the humbucker to the bridge to cancel interferences and noise. Even when a guitarist dials the guitar at its high-gain settings, the noise will still be barely noticeable.

In comparison with the recently-reviewed Strat, the HSS Strat feels virtually identical. But where does that DoubleTap humbucker fit? It’s not a high-output ‘rock’ humbucker, but in humbucking mode, as supplied, there’s still a noticeable volume lift compared with the Yosemites and, obviously, a thicker humbucker voicing with more rounded highs.
