What does GMX stand for in Hornady bullets?
What does GMX stand for in Hornady bullets?
Hornady has decided to step into the arena. The new Hornady bullet is called the “Gilding Metal eXpanding” (GMX), which gives a clue to what monolithic metal is used. Gilding metal is the same material most jacketed bullets use to wrap the lead core, an alloy composed of 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc.
What is GMX ammo?
Hard-hitting and deep-penetrating, the GMX® bullet combines monolithic construction with pioneering ballistic design to meet the need for a premium, non-traditional bullet. Tougher than pure copper, the mono-metal copper alloy has been proven to shoot cleaner, foul less, and deliver consistent, even pressure curves.
Is Hornady lead-free?
Polymer tip and streamlined design for ultra flat trajectories. Match grade AMP® bullet jackets provides maximum accuracy at all ranges. California compatible, lead-free.
How much weight does a Hornady GMX bullet have?
Hornady claims 1.5-times expansion and 95 percent weight retention, with 30 inches of penetration in ballistic gelatin. To test that claim, I fired two .30-06, 150-grain GMX bullets point-blank into Perma-gel.
What kind of bullets are in Hornady superformance?
Superformance ® ammunition is loaded with Hornady ® V-MAX, ® NTX, ® SST, ® GMX, ® and InterLock, ® bullets for the ultimate in performance, no matter what the game. Superformance ® Propellants are the heart of Superformance® ammunition and usher in a new era of performance.
Why does Hornady GMX bullet have two rings?
The boattail-style GMX has a polymer tip to raise the ballistic coefficient and to aid in initiating expansion. There are two rings cut into the forward portion of the bearing surface of the shank. These allow the displaced metal to flow when engaging the rifling, which can improve accuracy and reduce metal fouling.
